About
After successful projects for iron fuel, Steam Iron is the newest project of SOLID. With this project SOLID is expanding its scope. It is focused on storing the energy of hydrogen in the form of iron by using steam instead of burning iron. This project can form the basis for new innovative hydrogen storage solutions.
Its goal is to explore the possibility to store the energy of hydrogen in iron. In this way hydrogen can be used at any moment and in a safe manner, which is a big advantage of this method. In this project, we aim to build an installation that shows that hydrogen, and thus energy, is released when adding steam to iron. This reaction transforms the iron into iron-oxide, which can then be reduced again into iron with hydrogen. In this way we use iron as an circular energy carrier for hydrogen.
The project wouldn’t be possible without our partners. With the subsidie from Metropool Regio Eindhoven and the help of Metalot, DNV, RIFT and the Eindhoven University of Technology we are able to realize the installation.
