Steam Iron Reactor - 1

Success Story: SIR 1 - The Steam Iron Reactor Revolution

In a world striving for sustainable energy, SOLID’s SIR1 Steam Iron Reactor has emerged as a groundbreaking solution. Together with key partners—TU/e, DNV, RIFT, and Metalot(as a facilitating partner for building reactors, supporting safety studies)—we embarked on an ambitious journey to develop a revolutionary hydrogen storage technology. Today, we’re proud to say that SIR1 has not only met our expectations but has surpassed them, paving the way for a cleaner, more reliable hydrogen economy.

The Power of Iron: How SIR1 Works

At the heart of SIR1 is a simple yet powerful idea: using iron to safely store and release hydrogen. The SIR1 installation allows us to produce hydrogen by reacting iron with steam, creating iron oxide while generating a controlled flow of clean hydrogen gas. After this reaction, the iron oxide is reduced back to pure iron, creating a sustainable and repeatable cycle. This approach eliminates the need for high-pressure hydrogen storage, making it safer and more cost-effective than traditional methods.

With SIR1, we can now produce one kilogram of hydrogen per cycle — enough to fuel a hydrogen vehicle for over 100 kilometres. This first-of-its-kind installation has validated our assumptions, turning our vision into a tangible, reliable solution for hydrogen storage and transport.

A New Era in Hydrogen Storage and Transport

SIR1 isn’t just a proof of concept anymore; it’s an operational reality that offers immense possibilities:

– Efficient, safe hydrogen transport across regions and continents, using iron as a stable carrier.

– Long-term hydrogen storage solutions that can power CO₂-free grids and industrial systems.

– On-site hydrogen generation for industries requiring high-temperature processes or fuel flexibility, all without emissions.

Building a Clean Hydrogen Future

The success of SIR1 has laid the foundation for broader applications and scalability, moving us closer to our vision of a carbon-neutral energy system. Together with our partners, we’ve proven that sustainable hydrogen storage can be reliable, scalable, and practical, supporting diverse sectors from transportation to heavy industry.

SOLID and its partners continue to develop, refine, and expand on the SIR technology. With each step, SIR1 reaffirms our commitment to a cleaner, sustainable future—one powered by the groundbreaking potential of iron-based hydrogen storage.
